Review: Selling online
Whop Review
The backend I run my businesses on
Whop.com takes payments, manages memberships, gates access to Discord, courses and content, and pays you out. I use it as the payment processor and backend for several of my businesses. Here is what it does well, what to watch, and who should use it.

Every online business needs the same boring plumbing before it makes a dollar: a checkout, recurring billing, a way to give paying customers access and take it away when they cancel, refunds, and payouts. Building that yourself takes weeks. Bolting together five tools to fake it takes days and breaks constantly.
Whop is that plumbing, ready to go. I use it as the payment processor and backend for several of my businesses. In this Whop review (that is Whop.com, not the WHOOP fitness band) I cover what it does, how it works, what it costs you in plain terms, and the parts to watch.
What is Whop?
Whop (whop.com) is a platform for running an online business end to end. You create a "whop," which is your store, add products, choose how people pay, and plug in apps for what they get: a chat, a course, files, content pages, events, bookings, or access to your Discord server or Telegram group.
Whop handles the checkout, the billing, giving and removing access, refunds, and paying you out. There is also a marketplace where buyers can discover your product, and an API if you want to build on top of it.
How Whop works
- Create your whop. Set up your store with a name, branding and a description.
- Add what you sell. A paid community, a course, software, files, coaching calls or access to your Discord or Telegram.
- Set the price. Free, one-time, or recurring weekly, monthly or yearly, with free trials on subscriptions.
- Share your checkout. Buyers pay by card, bank, wallet, crypto or pay-later options, and get access instantly.
- Let it run. Renewals, cancellations and access removal happen on their own. Affiliates get paid automatically.
- Get paid out. Withdraw your balance to your bank or other payout methods.
How it stacks up
| Speed to launch | 4.9 / 5 |
|---|---|
| Memberships and access | 4.8 / 5 |
| Checkout and payment options | 4.7 / 5 |
| Affiliate program | 4.7 / 5 |
| Payouts | 4 / 5 |
| Support | 3.8 / 5 |
Building it yourself vs. Whop
Stitching it together
- A payment processor, a membership plugin and a course host
- Manually adding and removing people from Discord
- Chasing failed payments by hand
- No easy way to pay affiliates
- Weeks of setup before the first sale
With Whop
- One place for checkout, billing and access
- Discord and Telegram access granted and removed automatically
- Renewals and cancellations handled for you
- A built-in affiliate program that pays itself
- Live and selling the same day
The features I actually use
- Recurring memberships. Weekly, monthly or yearly billing, with free trials and automatic renewals.
- Access control. Paying members get into your Discord, Telegram, course or content, and lose access when they cancel. No manual work.
- Flexible checkout. Cards, bank payments, wallets, crypto and pay-later options in one checkout.
- Built-in affiliates. Set a commission and Whop tracks and pays your affiliates automatically, with custom deals for top partners.
- Apps. Courses, chat, forums, events, files, content pages and bookings, all inside your whop.
- Discover marketplace. List your product so buyers browsing Whop can find it.
- API and Sign in with Whop. Build your own site or app on top and let members log in with their Whop account.
Is Whop worth it?
Whop is free to start, with no monthly subscription. You pay a fee on each sale, plus extra for things like international cards, optional add-ons and faster payout methods. That is the right deal for a new business: your costs only show up when revenue does.
Compare that to the alternative. A membership plugin, a course host, a payment processor, a Discord bot and an affiliate tool each want a monthly fee and an afternoon of setup. Whop replaces all of them. For me the real value is time: I can launch and test an offer in an afternoon instead of building a backend for it.
The trade-off is control. Your money and your customer access run through Whop, so you play by its rules on payouts and reviews.
Whop pros and cons
Pros
- Launch and start selling in an afternoon
- Recurring billing, trials and access handled automatically
- Discord, Telegram, courses and content gated for you
- Built-in affiliate program with automatic payouts
- No monthly fee, you pay when you sell
- A marketplace that can send you buyers
Cons
- New or higher-risk accounts can have payouts held for review
- Fees add up with international buyers, add-ons and instant payouts
- Support leans on automation, so complex issues take longer
- The marketplace is full of hype products, which hurts first impressions
- Less control than running your own payment stack
Payouts and reviews: what to know
This is the part people complain about, so here it is straight. Whop can hold back part of your balance, called a reserve, when an account is new, has little history, or sees high refunds or disputes. Withdrawals can also be flagged for review. Held money releases on a date shown in your dashboard.
That is how every payment platform manages risk, and it is why you should treat your first months as building trust: deliver what you sell, keep refunds low, and answer disputes fast. Do that and payouts are routine.
Is Whop legit?
Yes. Whop is a real, venture-backed payments and storefront company, and I run several businesses on it. What varies is the sellers. The public marketplace leans toward trading, picks and make-money-online products, and Whop does not vouch for every one of them. As a seller that does not affect you directly. As a buyer, check the seller before you pay.

Whop FAQ
Is Whop legit?
Yes. It is a real, venture-backed payments and storefront platform, and I run several businesses on it. Individual sellers vary, so vet them before you buy.
Is Whop free to start?
Yes. There is no monthly fee. Whop takes a fee on each sale and on some payout methods.
Can I sell Discord or Telegram access?
Yes. A bot gives paying members access and removes it when they cancel.
Does Whop support free trials?
Yes, on subscriptions. The member is charged automatically when the trial ends.
How do payouts work?
You withdraw your balance to your bank or other methods. Standard bank payouts are slower and cheaper; instant options cost more. Newer accounts may have part of their balance held for a while.
Can buyers find my product on Whop?
Yes, through the Discover marketplace once your product page meets the listing requirements.
Can I run an affiliate program?
Yes. Set a commission, and Whop tracks and pays affiliates automatically.
Is Whop the same as WHOOP?
No. Whop (whop.com) is a platform for selling online. WHOOP is a fitness wearable.
My verdict
Whop is the fastest way I know to go from an idea to taking payments for it. It replaces the checkout, the membership logic, the access control and the affiliate program you would otherwise stitch together, and it costs nothing until you sell. Build a real track record, deliver what you promise, and it just works.
- Best for: Anyone selling memberships, communities, courses or digital products
- Skip it if: You want a fully white-label site of your own, or you sell physical products.
